About this scholarship
What you got
During your PhD in the humanities or social sciences, the Open Society Foundations provided additional funding on top of your existing grant. This was a grant, not a full scholarship. It was intended to bridge the gap between your other income and the actual costs of your studies. The exact amount was determined on an individual basis for each student and was not published. This support was provided to PhD students studying at accredited universities in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
Who could apply
- Level: You had already been admitted to a PhD programme. Master’s students who were planning to transfer to a PhD programme at a later date were not eligible to apply.
- Field of study: Humanities and social sciences only. Medicine, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, business administration, finance, marketing, and the visual and performing arts were excluded.
- Nationality: You were a national of one of the countries listed, for example Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Tunisia or Ukraine, as well as other countries in South-Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
- Other funding: You already had money from other sources and were able to prove it. The grant was simply an additional amount.
