Margaret Campbell Scott Scholarship

If you study Physics and Astronomy at University of Edinburgh, you will receive a one-off grant of 1,000 GBP (about 1,170 EUR). This will be paid in two equal instalments. You will receive the first half during your first year of study. You will receive the second half during your second year of study, but only if you achieve ‘Merit’ level results in your first year. The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy awards up to ten of these scholarships each year to its best first-year students.

Who can apply

• University and subject: You are starting a Bachelor’s degree at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.
• Study phase: This is your first time taking part and you are in your first or second year of study.
• Grades: You have some of the best admission results in physics and mathematics, as evidenced by your Advanced Higher and A-Level marks.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
• Financial need: Not required. Allocation is based on your grades, not on your income.

How to apply

There is no need to fill in any forms. The school automatically selects the recipients based on the admission results of its new pupils, and the headteacher makes the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

The prize is linked to a specific subject at a university and is awarded to those with the highest entry grades in physics and mathematics; the pool of eligible applicants is therefore small. Up to ten scholarships are awarded each year, which is helpful. It depends entirely on how well your A-level or Advanced Higher grades compare with those of other new physics students.
