Frankland Prize

It is a book prize worth about 92 EUR (£75), which is awarded once a year at the end of the academic year. The Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham awards it to the Bachelor’s students in Chemistry with the highest marks in the practical, laboratory-based part of their examinations. It is named after Percy Faraday Frankland, who was Professor of Chemistry in Birmingham from 1894 to 1918.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying chemistry at the University of Birmingham.
• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student at the Honours School of Chemistry.
• Grades: You achieved the highest marks in your year in the practical and laboratory-based parts of the exams.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

No application is required. The prize is awarded automatically at the end of the year to the student with the highest mark in Practical Chemistry.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a one-off merit award for the student who has achieved the highest practical marks in their year group. You cannot apply for it directly or work towards it. You receive it by achieving the best laboratory results in your year group. Please regard it as recognition of outstanding achievement rather than as financial support that you can factor into your plans.
