What the Harding Prize gives you

You will receive a one-off cash prize of approximately 92 EUR (75 GBP). The Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham awards this prize once a year. It was established through a donation from the widow of A.J.I. Harding, a former graduate of the chemistry programme at Birmingham. This is not an ongoing grant, but a one-off award for outstanding achievement in the first year of study.

Who can win it

• Level: You are a first-year student.
• Field of study: You’re studying chemistry.
• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
• How you win it: You’ve achieved the highest marks in the practical laboratory sessions amongst the first-year chemistry students.
• Nationality: Any nationality can win.

How to apply

No application is required. The prize is automatically awarded to the first-year student with the best results in the practical assignments.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student is awarded this prize each year, namely the one who achieves the highest marks in the laboratory practicals amongst all first-year chemistry students – so the bar is set high. You cannot apply for it, nor can you influence the outcome beyond your own performance. Think of it as a reward for outstanding work rather than as financial support that you can factor into your plans.
