About this scholarship

Fund of Markku Mannerkoski grant

You will receive a one-off grant of 3,000 to 5,000 EUR to support your PhD research at the University of Oulu in Finland. Most grants awarded in the last round amounted to 5,000 EUR, whilst a few ranged between 3,000 and 4,500 EUR. The amount will be paid as a one-off lump sum rather than in monthly instalments. It comes from the Markku Mannerkoski Fund, one of 25 named funds managed by a foundation that supports research at the University of Oulu. The foundation awards between 150,000 and 250,000 EUR annually, mainly for PhD projects. You must not use the amount exclusively for travel expenses.

  • Other funding: You will not receive a scholarship from the Tauno-Tönning Foundation in the same year and will not be employed by the university during the term of the scholarship.

How to apply

The call for applications takes place once a year, usually in April, and is announced on the Foundation’s website. Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online funding system. Please include a brief summary of your research project, a reference from your supervisor, a CV with your list of publications, and proof of your eligibility to pursue a PhD. Your faculty will draw up a ranking of the applications, and the Foundation’s Executive Board will decide who receives funding.
