About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a one-off grant for your doctoral thesis at the University of Oulu in Finland. The amount will be paid as a one-off lump sum. Half of the fund’s resources are allocated to English philology (the study of the English language and its texts), and the other half to medical research. The fund is one of 25 named donor funds administered by the ‘Oulun yliopiston tukisäätiö’ (University of Oulu Scholarship Foundation), which has been supporting researchers at the university since 1960.

Eligibility

  • Who it is for: You are an advanced PhD student, not a first-year student.
  • Field of study: Your research is in English philology or in medicine.
  • University: You are a researcher at the University of Oulu and are enrolled at the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS).
  • Study phase: You have an approved PhD plan and your dissertation research is already underway – around a year after starting your PhD programme.
  • Grant history: You may receive a maximum of two grants from the foundation in total. You may not receive a grant from the Tauno-Tönning Foundation in the same year.
  • Employment: You are not employed by the university during the funding period.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online funding system. Calls for applications take place four times a year: in March, May, September and December. You must submit an application form including a brief description of your work, a CV, a summary of your research project, a reference from your doctoral supervisor, proof of your eligibility to study, and a list of any previous funding received. The Foundation’s Executive Board decides who will receive funding.
