About this scholarship

Finnish Society of Forest Science travel grant

You get your travel, accommodation and conference registration costs covered for a trip abroad that supports forest research. There is no fixed sum. You list your actual costs in the application, and the grant pays for those items. It covers two kinds of trip: going to an international scientific meeting where you give a presentation, or a short research visit of up to two weeks to a research organisation abroad. The grant comes from the Finnish Society of Forest Science (Suomen Metsätieteellinen Seura), which funds forest research in Finland. The grant does not cover daily allowances, meals, travel insurance, mileage, overheads, or extra tours before or after a congress.

Who can apply

  • Career stage: You are a PhD student at a Finnish higher education institution or a postdoctoral researcher at a Finnish research organisation, and you obtained your PhD less than five years ago. Parental leave, as well as military or civilian service, extend this five-year period.
  • Senior scientists: You may only apply if you have been invited to deliver a keynote lecture identified as such in the conference programme, and the organisers are not covering your travel expenses.
  • Ukrainian scientists: If you are a Ukrainian forestry scientist working at a Finnish research institution or studying for a PhD in Finland, you can apply at any stage of your career.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, but must be studying or working at a Finnish university or research institution.
  • Field: Your trip must be for the purposes of forest research or a related postgraduate programme.
  • Presentation: Your abstract must have been accepted for you to be eligible for a conference travel grant. Should your presentation be rejected by the organisers, the grant will be forfeited.
  • Not eligible: Undergraduate students and students at universities of applied sciences. Master’s students may only apply for language study placements or study trips, but not for this travel grant.

How to apply

Applications are submitted via the association’s online grant application portal. First, you need to register and then provide a detailed breakdown of your travel budget. The current funding round runs from 19 January to 20 February 2026 and closes at 16:00; no further applications will be accepted after this date. Decisions will be made by mid-March, and you can claim the grant from 1 May 2026.
