About this scholarship

Juliana von Wendt Foundation research grant

You receive a research grant of around 10,000 EUR, the amount awarded in 2026. Recent grants have ranged up to 14,000 EUR, and the exact sum depends on your project. The grant funds research and development that replaces animal experiments or improves the welfare of laboratory animals. The money comes from the Juliana von Wendt Foundation (Juliana von Wendtin säätiö), a Finnish charity founded in 1971 that supports humane methods in science and medicine. One grant is awarded each year.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a researcher in Finland. All career stages can apply, from PhD students to postdoctoral researchers. Past recipients worked at the University of Helsinki and Tampere University.
  • Your project: You develop or adopt methods that replace animal testing, or that improve the welfare of laboratory animals. This covers fields such as toxicity testing, cancer research, surgery, antibody production, computer-assisted drug modelling, tissue culture and higher education.
  • Priority: Preference is given to projects that replace particularly harmful forms of animal exploitation, as well as those that have the greatest benefit for the welfare of humans or animals.
  • Language: You must submit your application in Finnish. The form and instructions are available in Finnish only.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s website, where you will find the application form and instructions. The allocation of grants is announced each year around 24 April.
