About this scholarship
Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation grant
You will receive a personal research grant of 29,000 EUR per year for full-time doctoral research in Finland. The grant is paid out for up to 12 months at a time. Postdoctoral researchers (who have already completed their PhD) receive 36,000 EUR per year. These amounts include statutory pension and accident insurance. You may also apply for additional funding for data, conferences or university-related costs. If you are working abroad, the amount you receive will depend on your place of work and the costs incurred there. The funding is provided by the Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation (Yrjö Jahnssonin säätiö), a private Finnish foundation that supports research in the fields of economics, medicine and health economics.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes, Master’s theses and MBA programmes are not eligible for funding.
- Field: Your research focuses on the fields of economics, medicine or health economics. Priority is given to monetary theory and wage formation in economics, lifestyle and genetic research in medicine, and health behaviour and health systems in health economics.
- Medicine: You already hold a basic medical qualification for medical research.
- Nationality and base: You are a Finnish national or work as an individual, research group or organisation based in Finland. You may also apply from outside Finland if your project has a clear and close link to the Finnish research community.
- No double funding: You may not receive this scholarship whilst also receiving a full-time salary or another full-time research scholarship. Paid part-time employment of up to 25% full-time hours is permitted.
- Spring call only: Scholarships for first-year PhD students in economics are open exclusively to candidates who have been nominated by their own Department of Economics.
How to apply
You apply through the Foundation's Online Grant Service in Finnish or English. The spring call runs 4-15 May 2026 and closes at 16:00 Finnish time, with decisions in June. The autumn call is open to all eligible applicants. It runs 1-30 September 2026, with decisions published on 16 December at 19:00. If you apply in medicine without peer-reviewed publications, or as a second-year economics applicant, you also need a supervisor's letter of recommendation.
If you are a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher in Finland, our guide Scholarships in Finland points you to further funding options beyond this grant.
