About this award / prize
What the AFSR Doctoral Dissertation Award gives you
As part of the prize, your doctoral thesis published as a book will be published in the ‘Religions en questions’ series by Editions de l’Harmattan. The value of the prize lies in the publication itself: your completed doctoral thesis will become a printed book that reaches other researchers. The prize is awarded by the Association Française de Sciences sociales des Religions (AFSR), a French academic association that promotes research into religion in sociology and other social sciences. No cash prize is awarded.
Who can apply
- Level: You have completed a PhD thesis.
- Topic: Your dissertation examines religion from a social science perspective, for example from the perspective of sociology, ethnology, anthropology, political science, history or political philosophy.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
- Where you studied: Every university counts, regardless of which one you obtained your PhD from.
- Language: The book has been published in French, so your dissertation must be written in French.
How realistic are your chances?
This is an annual prize awarded in a specific field: the social sciences of religion. The pool of applicants is small, but as only one book is selected each year, competition amongst suitable candidates remains fierce. If your doctoral thesis clearly falls within this field and can be published as a French-language book, you are a serious contender. The quality and suitability of the work are the decisive factors.
