About this scholarship

MILYON Master Scholarships

You will receive 1,000 EUR net per month for 10 months, i.e. 10,000 EUR for one academic year (roughly from September to June). The scholarship funds one year of Master’s study in Mathematics or Foundations of Computer Science at one of the universities in the Lyon-Saint-Étienne area in France. It is awarded by the Labex MILYON research laboratory as part of the French MathInfI postgraduate programme and is funded by the French government.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are starting a Master’s year (M1 or M2, depending on your degree programme) in Mathematics or Computer Science.
  • Where you study: You enrol on a recognised Master’s programme at the ENS de Lyon, the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 or the Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne.
  • Field of study: Mathematics (pure mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics) or the fundamentals of computer science, including machine learning and data mining.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The programme is primarily aimed at international students who are studying at a French higher education institution for the first time and who are living outside France at the time of application. High-achieving French students may also apply, and French dual nationality is permitted.
  • Grades: You have an outstanding academic record. The selection process also takes into account research placements, specialist skills and a clear career plan.
  • Language: Most degree programmes are taught in English. For the two years of the Master’s programme, which are taught in French, you will need a knowledge of French at level B2.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online using the form provided by the university offering your chosen degree programme (ENS de Lyon or Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1). This single application covers both your application for a place on the Master’s programme and your application for the scholarship. The application period runs from mid-November to 23 January. A selection panel will assess the applications; the results will be announced around mid-March.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. Only a handful of specific Master’s programmes in mathematics and computer science in Lyon are eligible, and it is aimed at outstanding international students enrolled on precisely these programmes. As a result, the pool of applicants is small compared to open scholarships. If you already have excellent grades and research experience, and clearly fit the profile of one of the listed programmes, your chances are good.
