"Brouillons d'un rêve" grant for photography and illustration

You will receive a one-off grant of up to 6,000 EUR (gross) for the development of a new photography, drawing or illustration project. A panel of photographers and illustrators will determine the exact amount based on the artistic quality of your project. The funding is provided by La Scam, a French society for multimedia authors. You may combine this grant with other professional funding you are already receiving. Applications are accepted once a year.

The grant supports work in the early stages of the creative process: press illustrations, illustrated reports, graphic novels, comics or children’s book illustrations – whether on paper, in digital form or using any other technique. If your project is an illustrated story, you must be both the author and the illustrator.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You must be applying as an individual and must be of legal age. Groups, agencies and other organisations may not apply.
• Nationality and residence: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply, and you may live anywhere.
• Age and experience: There is no age restriction and no prior knowledge is required. You do not need to be a member of La Scam.
• Project stage: Your project must still be in the early stages of planning. Projects that are complete or nearly complete cannot be submitted.
• What is not funded: Exhibitions, publications, editions and commissioned works are excluded from participation.
• How often: You may submit one project per calendar year. A rejected project may be resubmitted once. Once you have received funding, you must wait three years before you can apply again.

How to apply

You apply through the online form on La Scam's portal between 10 and 15 June, before midnight. Only 150 projects are accepted per round, and the form closes automatically once that limit is reached, so apply early. You submit a project dossier and a short CV in French. Selection runs over about five months: a pre-jury first, then the final jury decision.

How realistic are your chances?

The scholarship is limited to one field – photography and illustration – and a maximum of 150 applications will be accepted per round. As the number of places is limited, a compelling, original project stands a real chance. The jury places greater emphasis on personal style and a creative approach than on a detailed financial plan – in fact, a financial plan is not required at all. Submitting an application in the first few days of the June application window is the surest way to secure a place before it is fully booked.
