ARS Île-de-France research year (Année de recherche)

You will receive a salary of 27,188.19 EUR gross per year (approximately 1,772 euros net per month) to carry out research for a whole year, instead of undertaking your usual clinical training. The year runs from 1 November to 31 October of the following year. This is intended to give you time to prepare for a Master’s degree, start a PhD, or work towards an equivalent qualification. The programme is run by the Île-de-France Regional Health Agency (ARS), and the salary and rules are set out in a ministerial decree.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a junior doctor, pharmacy assistant or dentist undertaking specialist training (‘in-house’) and working in the Île-de-France region.
• Purpose: You would like to carry out research as part of a Master’s degree, a PhD or an equivalent qualification.
• Timing: You may begin your research year no earlier than in the second year of your specialist training (DES). It must end no later than one year after completion of the DES.
• Where you work: Your project will be carried out in a recognised French research laboratory affiliated to a university, or in an accredited foreign laboratory of equivalent standing.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. The key requirement is that you complete your specialist medical training in the Île-de-France region.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online only via the faculty responsible for applications in your discipline (for Medicine, this is the UFR Simone Veil – Santé at the UVSQ). For the 2026-2027 cycle, the application form was open from 2 February to 31 May 2026, 23:59. A regional panel chaired by the Dean of the Faculty will review your documents and your research project, after which the ARS will notify successful applicants. You will be assessed on the basis of the quality of your application and your research project. You must also apply separately to the Office for Junior Doctors for a leave of absence (‘mise en disponibilité’).

How realistic are your chances?

Every year, a decree sets a limit on the number of places (for example, 95 places for medicine in Île-de-France for the period 2025–26), meaning that there is genuine competition, the outcome of which depends on a compelling proposal. If you are based in the region, have a clear, well-supervised research proposal and submit a compelling application, your chances are good. Should you not be selected, you can apply again in subsequent years.
