ANRS MIE research grant

You will be offered a funded employment contract at a French research laboratory. The duration of the contract is full salary is paid for 36 months if you are a PhD student, 24 months for a postdoctoral fellowship, or 12 months for the fourth year of your PhD. In addition to your salary, you will receive a fixed sum of 5,000 EUR to cover publication costs, conference travel and professional development. This additional amount does not apply to fourth-year fellowships. The funds will be paid to your host institution, which will then enter into a fixed-term contract with you. This therefore constitutes funding for a full-time post rather than a supplementary grant. The funding body is the ANRS Maladies infectieuses émergentes (ANRS MIE), the French agency for research into infectious diseases.

Who can apply

• Where you work: You must be affiliated with a public or private French university or research institution. PhD students must be enrolled at a French doctoral school.
• Your level: To be eligible for a PhD scholarship, you must hold at least a Master’s degree. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, you must have completed a PhD. To be eligible for a fourth-year scholarship, you must hold a Master’s degree and have completed three years of PhD study at a French higher education institution.
• Field: You conduct research into emerging infectious diseases, with a focus on arboviruses, viral haemorrhagic fevers and viral respiratory diseases. All scientific disciplines are welcome. HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis and antibiotic resistance are not covered by this call for proposals. There is a separate call for proposals for these topics, which takes place twice a year.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Previous funding: You are not eligible to apply if you have already received ANRS-MIE research grants for a total of three years. You may submit one application per call for applications.

How to apply

You should apply online via the ANRS Apogée platform under the ‘Allocation de recherche Flash’ section and submit your complete application documents in English. The deadline for applications is 25 March. An international, independent scientific panel will assess the applications, and the ANRS MIE will make the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This call for proposals is narrowly defined: it exclusively funds research into emerging infectious diseases, requires a French host laboratory, and awards a maximum of 15 grants per year. The field is small, but the competition is fierce. Selection depends on the quality and originality of your project, which will be assessed by an international panel. If you already have a solid host laboratory and a compelling, feasible proposal on one of the priority topics, you stand a real chance.
