What the CLARA Mobility Grant gives you

You will receive up to 2,500 EUR for a single research visit, usually to a partner laboratory abroad. The funding covers travel, accommodation and subsistence costs, as well as registration fees. In some cases, lower maximum amounts apply: up to 500 EUR for a lecture or poster presentation at a conference, up to 500 EUR for second-year Master’s students, and up to 1,000 EUR for medical students or doctors. The funding is provided by Cancéropôle Lyon Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (CLARA), a regional network for cancer research in France, which funds approximately 8 to 10 visits each year. It helps you to learn new techniques, establish a research collaboration, present your work or explore a laboratory with a view to a future postdoctoral position.

Who can apply

• Field: You work in cancer research (oncology).
• Where you are based: You live in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France or are a member of an organisation based there. That is the only mandatory requirement.
• Who you are: Applications are open to a wide range of candidates. These include second-year Master’s students aiming to pursue a PhD in the natural sciences, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, staff members who have been employed within the last 5 years, medical students or doctors undertaking a PhD in the natural sciences, professionals from the health and care sectors, and even patients or their carers who are involved in research projects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Where you go: The placement takes place in a host laboratory, usually abroad.

How to apply

Please apply via the CLARA online portal at least 3 months before your planned stay. Applications are reviewed four times a year, in March, June, September and December. The deadline for applications for the current round is 29 June.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be involved in cancer research and be based in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, which means the pool of applicants remains small. However, as only 8 to 10 stays are funded each year, there is still genuine competition. However, if you clearly meet the requirements regarding the field of research and the region, and submit your application in good time before your trip, your chances are good. It is advantageous to apply early in one of the four annual call rounds.
