About this scholarship

The Edouard Glissant Scholarship

You will receive a one-off award of 5,000 EUR for your doctoral thesis. The University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis awards this scholarship once a year in collaboration with the Institut du Tout-Monde and the Maison de l’Amérique Latine. It is awarded to a PhD student whose research reflects the thinking of the poet and philosopher Edouard Glissant: cultural diversity, the intermingling of languages and cultures, and the exchange of ideas between different worlds. Ideally, your work should engage with several cultural contexts rather than being confined to a single one.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a PhD student and are in at least your second year of your PhD programme.
  • University: You are studying at the University of Vincennes-Saint-Denis in Paris 8.
  • Research topic: Your dissertation explores cultural diversity, shared knowledge and the convergence of different ways of thinking, as explored in the works of Edouard Glissant.
  • Field of study: Open to all disciplines. Previous winners have come from the fields of literature, philosophy, political science, art history and psychology.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, and there is no age limit.
  • Supervision: A jointly supervised thesis (co-direction or cotutelle, i.e. supervision shared between two institutions) is permitted.

How to apply

You should submit your CV, a certificate of enrolment, a personal statement, your research proposal and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview. The jury comprises representatives from the fields of literature, philosophy, journalism, the arts and science.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very narrowly defined. Only PhD students at the University of Paris 8 from their second year of study onwards, whose thesis relates to Glissant’s themes, are eligible to apply. The pool of eligible candidates is small, and only one person is awarded the prize each year. If your research clearly aligns with these topics and your supervisor strongly supports you, your prospects are good. Please note that the last documented call for applications took place in 2018–2019 and no new call has been published to date.
