Mustela Foundation research grant for child development

You will receive a research grant of up to 6,000 EUR for one year’s doctoral or postdoctoral research on the topic of child development. Each year, the Mustela Foundation awards a total of 12,000 EUR across two scholarships. The foundation was established in 1982 to promote research in the field of child health and parenting. It supports research into the biological, psychological and social development of children, both under normal and challenging conditions. Research into physical (somatic) illnesses is not funded.

Who can apply

• Level: You are at doctoral or postdoctoral level.
• Qualification: You have successfully completed your research master’s degree (Master’s in 2 Research) before October of the year in which you are applying. You must provide proof of this at the selection meeting in October.
• Field of study: Your project falls within the fields of psychology, sociology, clinical human and social sciences, or psychiatry. It deals with pregnancy and childbirth, parenthood or children.
• Where the research happens: You are carrying out the project in mainland France (France métropolitaine).
• No animal testing: Your project does not involve animal testing.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Repeat rule: You cannot receive the grant for two consecutive years.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online form during the annual call for proposals. The call for proposals runs from February to early June. For the 2025 round, the deadline for applications was 6 June. An academic committee assesses the projects and announces the results in October. The grants are paid out at the end of the year.

How realistic are your chances?

Only two scholarships are awarded each year. Your project must fall within a specific field of study and be carried out on the French mainland, meaning that very few people meet the eligibility criteria, but competition for these two places is fierce. A clear methodology, a sound financial plan and the support of your supervisor will help you stand out from other applicants. If your research clearly aligns with the focus on child development and you submit a compelling application, your prospects are good.
