JSBE Doctoral School grant

You will receive a grant of up to 10,000 EUR for your PhD in Business Administration, Economics or Finance at the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE) in Finland. This short-term grant covers your living costs during an intensive phase of your PhD. The amount will be paid directly into your bank account. In Finland, this amount is generally considered taxable income. Most PhD students combine this grant with other sources of funding, such as scholarships from Finnish foundations, to complete their studies.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student, not a Bachelor’s or Master’s student.
• Where you study: You are enrolled on the JSBE PhD programme in Business Administration, Economics and Finance at the University of Jyväskylä.
• Field of study: Your degree subject is in the field of business administration (e.g. accounting, marketing, management, corporate environmental management, or strategy and entrepreneurship) or in the field of economics and finance.
• What the money is for: You need financial support to start your PhD, to fund an intensive period of study, or to complete your thesis.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Note: Admission to the PhD programme does not automatically mean that you will receive funding. You must apply for funding separately.

How to apply

Applications are made via the JSBE Doctoral School. The main round takes place in the autumn (October to November). For the autumn semester, a shorter supplementary round is usually opened in May. Your Research Committee will make its decision based on the quality of your application and your progress. The comments from your Head of Department and your principal supervisor will also be taken into account; you should therefore speak to your supervisor at an early stage.

How realistic are your chances?

The pool of eligible candidates is small. You must already be enrolled as a PhD student at the JSBE in one of the specific departments, which rules out most applicants from the outset. Funding is limited, and admission alone does not guarantee anything. The decision depends on demonstrable progress and strong support from your supervisor and the head of department. A well-reasoned application from a student who is making visible progress and which is submitted at an early stage has good prospects.
