Despite the economic downturn, Portugal continues to support spending on higher education, although it has increased the minimum tuition fee to a still-reasonable 1,000 € a year. While obtaining a grant or loan to study in Portugal may not be as easy as in many other countries in Europe, it is still a practical expectation. Only one in six Portuguese students receive a needs-based grant from the government.
