Prémio Científico Mário Quartin Graça

You receive a one-off prize of 5,000 EUR for the best doctoral thesis in the social sciences and humanities that links Portugal and Latin America. The winner is also invited to a public award ceremony. The prize is given once a year by the Casa da América Latina in Lisbon.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You finished your PhD less than three years before the application deadline.
• Where you studied: You completed the PhD at a university in Spain, Portugal, Latin America or the United States.
• Field of study: Your thesis is in the social sciences or humanities.
• Topic: Your thesis connects Portugal and Latin America. This can be through the subject itself, through your own background, or through the universities involved. For example, a Latin American student writing on Portugal, or a Portuguese student writing on Latin America.
• Nationality: You come from Portugal or from a Latin American country.
• Grades: Your thesis was graded at least "Bom" (Good) or the equivalent. If your university does not grade theses, you provide an official statement saying so.
• Bonus: Studying at universities on both sides of the Atlantic, or having supervisors from both sides, counts in your favour but is not required.

How to apply

You apply by email with your completed application form, ID, proof of your thesis grade, a recommendation letter from a professor at your doctoral university, and the full thesis. The deadline for the 2026 round is 31 May 2026. A five-member jury decides the winner, and its decision is final.
