About this scholarship

Camões Institute co-operation scholarship

You will receive a monthly living allowance to support your studies at a university or university of applied sciences in Portugal, as well as a one-off settlement allowance of 275 EUR and assistance with tuition fees. The amount of the benefits depends on your level of study:

  • Bachelor's degree: 380 euros per month, 50 euros per month for accommodation, 930 euros per year for tuition fees and 165 euros per year for equipment.
  • Master's degree: 710 euros per month and up to 1,100 euros in tuition fees.
  • PhD: 870 euros per month and up to 1,650 euros in tuition fees.

The scholarship is valid for one academic year. It may be renewed each year until the student completes their degree; funding for a PhD may be provided for up to three years. Funding is provided by Camões, the Portuguese government agency for international cooperation, under agreements with the individual Portuguese-speaking countries. The aim is to train young professionals in fields where their home country has a need.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a national and resident of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe or Timor-Leste. You do not hold Portuguese nationality.
  • Where you study: You would like to study at a university or university of applied sciences in Portugal.
  • Level: You are starting a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme.
  • Field of study: Any subject is acceptable. Preference is given to courses that are not offered in your home country.
  • Link to home country: Preference will be given to applicants who have an active connection to an organisation in their home country.

The scholarships are awarded in equal numbers to men and women.

How to apply

You apply in your home country to the national authority responsible for the scholarship, using the Camões Institute’s application form for your level of study (one form for a Bachelor’s degree, another for a Master’s and a PhD). Each country sets its own deadlines and specifies the required documents. If there are more applicants than places available, academic grades will determine who is awarded a scholarship.
