About this scholarship
Rotary Portugal Scholarship
You will receive an annual grant to help fund your studies in Portugal. The indicative amount is 500 EUR per year for upper secondary education and 750 EUR per year for higher education. The most common form is the co-funded scholarship (Bolsas Comparticipadas). In this case, the Fundação Rotária Portuguesa (FRP) covers 50 per cent, and your local Rotary club or a sponsor covers the remainder. A scholarship is valid for one academic year. You can renew it until you complete your studies, but for a maximum of 36 months in total. The FRP is a Portuguese foundation based in Coimbra, which has been supporting students since 1959. In addition, ten ‘Founders’ Scholarships’ (Bolsas dos Fundadores), each worth 500 EUR, are awarded annually by lottery.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are studying in Portugal. This may be upper secondary education (science and humanities, vocational or other streams) or higher education leading to a vocational technical qualification (2 years), a ‘Licenciatura’ (6 to 8 semesters) or an integrated Master’s programme (10 to 12 semesters).
- Residence: You live in Portugal.
- Financial need: Your family cannot afford the cost of your studies. If there is a conflict between financial need and academic performance, financial need takes precedence.
- Grades: You get good marks at school.
- Field of study: Any topic is allowed.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they live and study in Portugal.
How to apply
You must submit the application form (Boletim de Candidatura) and the privacy policy to your local Rotary Club by 31 July each year. The club will review your application and forward it to the FRP, whose committee decides who will receive a scholarship. To extend the scholarship for a further year, you must submit a new application by 31 July and provide evidence that you still require financial support and are maintaining good academic performance.
