About this award / prize

The Charles Medal in Anatomy

As the top first-year anatomy student at University College Cork (UCC), you will receive a gold medal. This medal is awarded once a year. It honours a 1909 donation made by John James Charles, a former professor of anatomy and physiology. This is purely an honorary award and does not come with a cash prize.

Who can apply

  • University: You’re studying at University College Cork.
  • Study year: You are a first-year medical student, registered in the current session.
  • Subject: Your results in the subject of anatomy, taken from the modules FM1010, FM1020, FM1030 and FM1040, will be taken into account.
  • Grades: Your overall mark in the subject of anatomy (your total marks from these modules) is amongst the best 10% in your class. The medal will then be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply separately. The medal is awarded automatically on the basis of your results in the first-year anatomy examination.
