University of Limerick - UL Sports Scholarships

Benefit

You get a support package from the University of Limerick (UL) in Ireland for elite athletes who also study there. The value is more than 1,200 EUR per year at Bronze level, more than 5,000 EUR at Silver and more than 10,000 EUR at Gold. These figures are the value of the support, not cash paid to you. What each level covers:

• Bronze (over 1,200 EUR/year): A training-cost grant, sports science support, high-level coaching, gym and UL Sport Arena membership, academic flexibility around your training, and branded sports clothing.
• Silver (over 5,000 EUR/year): Everything in Bronze, plus on-campus accommodation and 50% of your registration fee (the main annual student charge in Ireland).
• Gold (over 10,000 EUR/year): Everything in Silver, but with your full registration fee covered instead of half.

All levels also include seminars, workshops and academic mentoring (one-to-one guidance) to help you balance sport and study.

Eligibility

• University: You are a current full-time UL student, or you are applying to UL for the first time through the Irish CAO admissions system or as a transfer student.
• Study level: Open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Sport: You are a member of a national governing body of sport recognised by the Irish Sports Council, in the sport you apply for. All such sports qualify.
• Grades: You get no reduction in entry points. You must reach the normal admission points for your course.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply, as long as you study at UL.
• More than one sport: If you compete in several sports, you can apply as a dual athlete. Send a separate application for each sport.

How to apply

You apply online through the UL sports scholarships portal. For the September 2027 intake, applications open on 4 January 2027 at 08:00 and close on 5 March 2027 at 23:59. After the deadline the university draws up a shortlist. You usually hear whether you have been shortlisted by the end of April. One application also puts you forward automatically for several sport-specific scholarships in athletics, swimming and rowing.
