About this award / prize

What you win

This is a composition competition, not a monthly payment. If you win, you will receive prize money of 1,500 EUR. Your winning composition will also be performed live in a concert in the Sala Scarlatti at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatoire in Naples. The prize is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs in Naples (Gruppo Partenopeo) in memory of Antonio Falconio, a former president of the conservatoire.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatoire of Music in Naples.
  • Your subject: You are studying composition, choral conducting and choral composition, or jazz music.
  • The task: You compose an original piece set to a poem chosen by the Conservatory director, scored for voice and up to three instruments.
  • Anonymous entry: You must submit your work with a title only and without stating your name, so that the jury can judge the music without knowing who has composed it.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at the conservatoire.

How to apply

Please submit your composition to the Conservatoire by 30 November. Please send a recording and copies of the score, marked only with the theme you have chosen. A jury will assess the anonymously submitted entries and select the winner. The result will be announced and the piece performed at the final concert.

How realistic are your chances?

The field of entrants is small. Only students on composition-related courses at this one conservatoire in Naples are eligible to enter, and the prize is awarded to a single winning work. Your chances depend on the quality of your composition, not on your marks or financial need. As the field of entrants is small, a strong and original musical setting of the given text stands a real chance of winning.
