About this award / prize

Clementina Gatti study prize (type A)

You will receive 4,000 EUR as a one-off grant to fund a research stay abroad at another university or research institute over the next 12 months. The money will be paid out in three instalments: 1,000 EUR upon winning the award, 1,000 EUR after six months and 2,000 EUR after twelve months. The University of Milan (La Statale) has established this prize in memory of Professor Clementina Gatti to help a recent Master’s graduate continue their research with a view to publication.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You have obtained a ‘Laurea Magistrale’ (Master’s degree) from the Faculty of Humanities (Studi Umanistici) at the University of Milan.
  • Timing: You must have graduated no more than one year before the application deadline.
  • Field of study: Your master's thesis covered a topic in the sciences of antiquity, with a focus on ancient history, and stands out for original, new findings.
  • Research plan: You intend to continue this research whilst on visits to other universities or research institutions, with a view to publishing your findings.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Prior awards: You have not yet received any previous winnings based on the same documents.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the university’s online form. Please attach your final thesis, a self-declaration regarding your degree and your grades, and a dated and signed research proposal. The application deadline is 21 October 2026 at 12:00. A panel appointed by the university will select the winner based on the documents you have submitted. There will be no interview, and you will be informed of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very selective: only one scholarship is awarded, and you must hold a Master’s degree from a specific faculty in Milan, with a dissertation on ancient history. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small, meaning that a suitable candidate can expect to face only limited competition. The decisive factors for the award are a thesis with clearly original findings and a concrete plan for the research stay abroad.
