Prize "in memory of the victims of the Linate disaster"

You will receive a sum of one-time cash prize of 6,000 EUR for a completed thesis on the subject of aviation safety. This is a one-off payment to the winner, not a monthly scholarship. It is funded by the City of Milan (Comune di Milano) in memory of the 118 people who lost their lives in the Linate air disaster on 8 October 2001, with the aim of promoting research in the field of aviation safety and prevention. The award will be presented during a public ceremony at the Palazzo Marino in Milan.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You hold a Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale), are a PhD student or have already completed your PhD.
• Field of study: Your dissertation focuses on engineering or law.
• Topic: Your dissertation focuses on safety and prevention in aviation.
• Where you studied: You defended your thesis at an Italian university within the period set by the call (for the sixth edition, between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2020).
• Nationality: Both Italian and foreign applicants are welcome to apply.

How to apply

Applications must be made via the public call for applications on the City of Milan’s website. You must submit your degree certificate, a copy of your dissertation, a CV and the application form. The application deadline is 31 January. A panel comprising representatives of the City Council and aviation safety experts will select the winner; only the winner will be notified personally.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize has very strict criteria. Your dissertation must be in the field of engineering or law, deal specifically with aviation safety, and be defended at an Italian university within a specified timeframe. This leaves only a small group of suitable candidates. If your thesis addresses this exact topic, your chances are good. Only one prize is awarded per edition, so the winning thesis will be one that is clearly relevant and original.
