The Pina Carmirelli violin prize

The winner receives a one-off prize of 700 EUR and a commemorative plaque, and gives a solo recital at the award ceremony. The Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan awards the prize each year to the best female graduate of the violin course for that academic year. The prize honours Pina Carmirelli (1914-1993), one of Italy’s leading violinists, who obtained her own violin diploma at this conservatoire. This is a one-off award for the best graduation performance in violin studies, not a monthly scholarship.

• Where you study: You are a violin student at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire in Milan.
• Level: You will be completing the violin course this academic year.
• Result: You are the top violin graduate in your year group.
• Who is eligible: The prize goes to a female graduate.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they are studying at the Milan Conservatoire.

How to apply

You do not need to submit an application. The Conservatoire selects the winner itself, on the recommendation of the violin teachers. The prize is awarded every year in September at a ceremony in Varzi, near Pavia, where the winner gives a concert.

How realistic are your chances?

Every year, only one person wins: the best female graduate in the violin programme at a single conservatoire. The selection process is therefore very rigorous from the outset. You cannot apply, as the decision rests with the violin department. Your chances depend entirely on whether you are the best female graduate of your year.
