About this grant / loan

Fee exemption for top students at Sapienza University of Rome

You pay almost no tuition fees. Instead of the full fees, you only have to pay a fixed amount of 30 EUR per year, plus the regional tax (140 EUR) and the stamp duty (16 EUR). That comes to a total of around 186 EUR per year. This exemption, granted as a ‘studente meritevole’ (high-achieving student), is provided by ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome, a public state university. It applies for the entire duration of your studies, provided you meet the required grade and credit targets each year.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolling at ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome for the 2025–2026 academic year.
  • School leavers (bachelor or single-cycle master): You completed secondary school between 2024 and 2025 with the top mark of 100/100 or 100/100, and this is your first enrolment.
  • Master students (two-year master): You have completed your Bachelor’s degree in 2024-2025 in the degree programme 110/110 or 110/110, either at Sapienza (where you held the same exemption throughout your studies) or at another Italian university.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, but your school-leaving qualification or bachelor’s degree must have been obtained in Italy. Foreign qualifications are not recognised.
  • Study status: You are a regular full-time student, not a part-time student, and are not behind in your studies (‘fuori corso’), and this exemption has not yet been withdrawn.
  • To keep it each year: By 10 August, you must have earned at least 40 credit points (36 for courses in the healthcare professions), completed all credit points from previous years, maintained an average of at least 28/30, and not receive a mark lower than 27 in any single examination.

How to apply

New Bachelor’s and Master’s students on the single-cycle degree programme, as well as Sapienza graduates commencing a Master’s degree, must apply for ‘Studente meritevole’ status via the ‘Infostud’ online portal when enrolling. If you obtained your Bachelor’s degree at another Italian university, you must first pay the first instalment in full. You must then submit a written application including a self-declaration regarding your academic history, after which the authorities will adjust your subsequent instalments accordingly.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a selection process with a limited number of places. Instead, automatic admission applies to all those who meet the strict academic requirements. If you achieved the highest mark (100/100) at school or graduated with 110/110 and enrol at Sapienza, you will be granted this exemption. The real challenge lies in retaining this entitlement, as even a single exam mark of 27/30 or the loss of full-time student status will result in you losing this benefit.
