About this award / prize

What the Bonfiglioli degree prize gives you

You can win a 6-month paid internship at one of the Bonfiglioli Group’s sites in Italy. It is awarded for the best Master’s thesis in the fields of industrial automation, power transmission and control, or mechatronics (systems combining mechanics, electronics and computer science). Bonfiglioli Riduttori S.p.A. funds the prize, and the Comitato Leonardo (the Italian Quality Committee) organises it. The winners are honoured at the ‘Premio Leonardo’ ceremony in Rome, attended by the President of the Italian Republic. In previous editions, a cash prize of approximately 3,000 EUR was awarded instead, but in recent editions the internship has been described.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale) or are about to graduate.
  • Field of study: You have a degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering.
  • Thesis topic: Your thesis deals with industrial automation, power transmission and control, or digital solutions for mechatronic power-transmission systems.
  • Grades: Your final mark is at least 90/100 (or the equivalent mark 100/110).
  • Nationality: Anyone can apply, including applicants from abroad who meet equivalent requirements.
  • First-time entrant: You haven’t won this prize yet.

How to apply

Please send your application to the Comitato Leonardo office in Rome. The deadline for applications is 31 October each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This award has very strict eligibility criteria. Only engineering graduates with a good final mark and a dissertation on a specific topic in the fields of mechatronics or power transmission are eligible to enter, meaning that the pool of entrants is small. If your dissertation clearly aligns with Bonfiglioli’s areas of focus and you meet the grade requirements, your chances are good. As only one dissertation wins in each edition, a precise match with the respective annual theme is more important than a polished presentation.
