DiSCo Lazio extraordinary grant (Contributo Straordinario)

You get a one-off payment of between about 557 EUR and 6,416 EUR for one academic year, if a serious personal or family crisis has thrown your studies off track. The exact amount depends on where you live while studying: about 2,228 EUR if you study in your home town, about 3,500 EUR if you commute, and up to 6,416 EUR if you live away from home to study. Instead of the money, or on top of it, you can get free meals in the university canteens and a place in student housing. In your first year past the standard course length, you get half the amount. The grant comes from DiSCo, the public body for the right to study in the Lazio region of Italy (formerly LazioDiSU).

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at a university or an arts/music college (AFAM) in the Lazio region.
• Degree level: You study for a Bachelor's, a Master's or a single-cycle Master's degree. Doctoral, postgraduate specialisation and separate master's courses do not qualify.
• Field of study: Any subject qualifies.
• Nationality: Italian and international students can apply.
• A serious event: In the academic year before you apply, you went through a grave crisis: violence in or outside the family, being taken into care by social services, a serious illness or disability that newly affected you, or the death or serious illness of a family member. You must prove it with official documents from hospitals, courts, social services or anti-violence centres. A self-declaration is not accepted.
• Financial need: Your household income indicator (ISEE) is at most 27,726.79 EUR, and your wealth indicator (ISPE) at most 60,275.66 EUR. Above two thirds of the income limit, the amount is reduced step by step.
• Impact on your studies: Because of that crisis, you either fell short of the required study credits or could not apply for the normal DiSCo scholarships.
• No double funding: You get no other scholarship or extraordinary grant from DiSCo, the region or another public or private body for the same year, and you owe DiSCo no unpaid debts.

How to apply

You apply online through your personal area on the DiSCo website by 4 February at 12:00. You log in with your digital ID (SPID or CIE), or, if you are an international student, with DiSCo credentials. A commission scores each application on the severity of the event, your academic results and your income, and may invite you to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut very narrowly. You need both a documented serious crisis from the previous year and low income, which keeps the eligible group small. If you clearly meet those conditions and can back the event up with official paperwork, your prospects are solid, since the commission weighs the severity of your situation most heavily. Weak documentation is the main reason applications fail, so apply within the window with complete proof.
