Momigliano Scholarship in Arts

Over a period of two years, you will receive approximately 19,500 EUR per year (17,000 GBP), as well as exemption from UCL’s enrolment and tuition fees. UCL will pay out this amount in four instalments (October, January, April and June). University College London (UCL) established this scholarship in 1989 in memory of Arnaldo Momigliano, a professor of Ancient History at the university. In return, you will teach up to six hours per week at UCL’s Institute of Italian, primarily as a language assistant (Lettore).

Who can apply

• Your school: You are studying at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in Italy. Only students from that institution are eligible.
• Nomination, not self-application: The Scuola Normale Superiore is recommending you. It is not possible to apply directly.
• Level: As a rule, PhD students; however, in exceptional cases, Bachelor’s students may also be nominated.
• Where you study: You’ll be spending the two years at UCL in London as a visiting student.
• Field of study: Each subject within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UCL. The subject ‘Ancient World’ is given priority in alternating rounds, provided a suitable candidate is nominated.
• What counts: You will be assessed on the basis of your qualifications, publications and research proposal.

How to apply

The Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa will submit the nominations to UCL by 1 May. An advisory committee will then make a recommendation as to who should receive the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective. Only students at an Italian university may be nominated, and it is not possible to apply independently. The pool of eligible candidates is very small. So, if your university puts you forward and your research achievements are impressive, your chances are good. Please note that this scholarship is currently under review and was not offered in the most recent call for applications. You should therefore check whether it is still being awarded before counting on it.
