About this scholarship

Grete Sondheimer Fellowship

You will receive 1,580 EUR for a research stay of up to 2 months at the Warburg Institute in London, which is part of the University of London. The fellowship is intended to cover your living expenses whilst you make use of the Institute’s collections. The Institute holds collections relating to cultural history, art history, the history of ideas and the classical tradition. Professor Ernst Sondheimer established the fellowship in memory of his aunt, Grete Sondheimer, who worked at the Warburg Library from 1944 to 1947.

Who can apply

  • Your project: You are leading a research project in which you are making use of the Warburg Institute’s library, photo collection or archive.
  • Field of study: All the areas with which the institute is concerned, such as cultural and intellectual history, art history or the classical tradition.
  • Where you go: You will carry out your research in person at the Warburg Institute in London.
  • Nationality: Anyone can apply, regardless of their nationality.

How to apply

Apply to the Warburg Institute for a short-term research fellowship. The application deadline is 28 November.

How realistic are your chances?

As this scholarship is tied to a specific institute and its collections, it is only open to researchers whose work actually relies on the collections of the Warburg Institute. This means that the pool of applicants remains small. If your research clearly draws on the library or the archive and you can explain why the visit is important, your chances are good. A focused, well-defined project counts for more here than a broad one.
