What the Jeremy Griffiths Studentship gives you

You will receive a comprehensive support package for one year of your Master’s degree at the University of Oxford:

• Your tuition fees will be paid in full at the UK domestic rate.
• You will receive a grant to help cover your living costs.
• You’ll be provided with free accommodation at St Hilda’s College.

The prize is awarded by the Faculty of English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. It is named after Jeremy Griffiths, a book historian and manuscript expert who studied medieval literature at Oxford.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are applying for one of two Master’s programmes at Oxford: the MSt in English Language and Literature (650-1550) or the MPhil in English (Medieval).
• Research topic: Your proposed research project focuses on the history of books prior to 1550, i.e. on how books and manuscripts were produced, copied and used during that period.
• College: You are studying at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, where the scholarship is awarded.
• Fee status: You are entitled to the tuition fee rate applicable to UK students.

How to apply

There is no separate application form for the scholarship. You should submit the standard Oxford application for your Master’s programme by 24 January. All eligible applicants will then be automatically considered. The Department of English will select the scholarship recipient.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: one place per year, exclusively for two specific medieval degree programmes, open only to British students and only for research into the history of the book prior to 1550. This means that the pool of eligible applicants remains small. If your research proposal clearly falls within the field of the history of the book for this period and you secure a place on the MSt or MPhil programme, you have a genuine chance of success. The key factor is a compelling, clearly focused research proposal.
