About this scholarship

What the choral scholarship offers

This scholarship enables you to sing in the Guildford Cathedral Choir whilst studying at the University of Surrey. It runs for up to 36 months, which is roughly equivalent to the duration of a full undergraduate degree. Alongside your studies, you will gain regular performance experience as part of an active cathedral choir. The scholarship consists of a place and a role, rather than a fixed cash payment. It is awarded jointly by the University of Surrey and Guildford Cathedral, both of which are situated on the same hill in Guildford.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are a student at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.
  • Field: You’re studying music or singing and sing in the cathedral choir.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Skill: You must be able to sing at the standard required for a cathedral choir. This is usually assessed during an audition.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective: you must be studying at a specific university and be a good enough singer to perform in a cathedral choir, so only a few people are eligible. If you’re a talented singer and are already planning to go to Surrey, your chances are good. Places in the choir are limited and are awarded through an audition, so it’s more about how well you prepare than the number of applicants.
