What the Georg Schwarzenberger Prize gives you

You will receive a annual award recognising outstanding work in public international law, which focuses on the relationships between states, treaties, human rights and international courts. This is an honourary award rather than a monthly scholarship, so no monetary prize is attached to it. The award is named after Georg Schwarzenberger, who taught international law at the University of London from 1938 to 1975. It is presented by the Director of the University’s Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS).

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at one of the six law schools of the University of London, such as UCL, the LSE, King’s College London, Queen Mary or City Law School.
• Level: You may be a Bachelor’s or Master’s student, including LLM and PhD students.
• Field: His greatest achievements lie in the field of international law.
• Performance: Your performance in this area stands out clearly from that of your fellow students.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply.

How to apply

Candidates cannot apply themselves. Each of the six law faculties puts forward a candidate, and the Director of the IALS, together with a selection panel, selects the winner. If two nominees are deemed to be equally deserving, the prize may be shared.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection is very limited. Only students from the six law faculties of the University of London are eligible, and each faculty nominates just one candidate per year. As you are dependent on your faculty putting forward your name, the most important thing is to stand out to your lecturers in the field of international law. For a student with top marks in this subject area, the more your achievements in this field are recognised, the better your chances of being selected by your faculty.
