About this scholarship

Hockerill Educational Grant

You will receive 500 to 1,250 GBP per year (about 590 to 1,480 EUR, on average around 1,030 EUR) as a grant towards the costs of teacher training or a course in religious education. The grant is awarded for one academic year. Lower fees will result in lower amounts; in exceptional cases, higher amounts may be awarded if your financial circumstances require it. You may reapply for the following year if you continue to require support. The funding comes from the Hockerill Educational Foundation, a UK charity that funds the training and further education of teachers specialising in religious education. Each year, it awards approximately 70,000 GBP to between 70 and 80 students.

Who can apply

  • What you study: You are undertaking teacher training, such as a PGCE (a one-year postgraduate course leading to a teaching qualification), another teacher training course, or a degree programme leading to a career in teaching. Priority is given to religious education. Current teachers and teaching assistants undertaking further training, as well as those conducting research in the field of religious education, are also eligible to apply.
  • Where you study: You are studying in the United Kingdom.
  • Study stage: The grant normally does not cover the first year of a three- or four-year degree. Mature students may be an exception. A master's degree is only funded if it relates directly to teaching religious education.
  • Financial need: Your financial situation always plays a part.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. International students who pay very high tuition fees do not, as a rule, receive financial support, unless they are nearing the end of their studies and are at risk of having to drop out for financial reasons.
  • Not funded: Training in other professional fields such as accountancy, law, medicine, nursing, counselling or social work; theology or training for the ministry (unless you also teach at a school); as well as language courses or periods spent abroad as part of a year abroad.

How to apply

Please email the Foundation to request an application form. The deadline for applications for the following academic year is 31 May. Some decisions will be announced as early as mid-May, but most individual scholarships will be announced in mid-July.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a specific target group: people who are training to become teachers, particularly in the field of religious education, and who are studying in the UK. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. With 70 to 80 scholarships available each year, your chances are good provided you clearly meet the eligibility criteria. Demonstrate a genuine commitment to the teaching profession and a genuine financial need, and apply in good time before the deadline in May, as no emergency scholarships are available once the academic year has begun.
