Hodcroft Larsen Undergraduate Scholarship

Whilst studying Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University, you will receive £2,000 per year (about 2,300 EUR) for three years. The prize was established by two Newcastle graduates who studied chemical engineering in the 1970s. It supports students who need financial assistance to successfully complete their degree.

Who can apply

• Course: You will be starting Year 1 of the Chemical Engineering degree programme at Newcastle University (BEng or MEng, including the option with an industrial placement).
• Where you study: You are a home student based in the United Kingdom studying at Newcastle University.
• Financial need: You come from a low-income household and can provide evidence of this. You have also applied for the full student loan to which you are entitled.
• Background: You belong to a group that receives active support from the university in accessing higher education. For example, you may have received free school meals, been in care, or no longer have contact with your family.
• Preference: Female students from within the country who normally live in the United Kingdom will be given preference. This is an advantage, not a requirement.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of your academic potential, your enthusiasm and your suitability for the degree programme.

How to apply

Once you are enrolled as a student, you can apply online via the student portal. The application period begins at the start of your first semester. The deadline is 31 October, and the Student Finance Team will inform you of the outcome by the end of the autumn semester.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very limited. Only first-year students studying Chemical Engineering at Newcastle who are UK home students and can demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria, your chances are good, particularly if you are a female student eligible for preferential treatment. As only a few of these scholarships are awarded each year, you should apply as soon as the portal opens.
