University of Bristol Bursary

You will receive an annual grant of up to about EUR 2,900 (£2,500), which you will never have to repay. The University of Bristol pays this grant for each year of your studies. The exact amount depends on your household income: the lower your family’s income, the more you will receive. You will receive approximately 2,900 (£2,500) euros if your household income is £10,000 or less; the amount decreases gradually to around 580 (£500) for incomes between £40,001 and £50,000.. Part-time students receive a proportion based on the percentage of full-time tuition fees they pay. You can also purchase a discounted university sports pass, with the size of the discount depending on how much support you receive.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s student (on your first Bachelor’s degree programme) and are studying full-time or part-time.
• Where you live: You are considered a British student and are currently living in the United Kingdom. Students from the EU are only eligible in exceptional circumstances, for example if they hold ‘Settled Status’ and are entitled to an income-contingent loan to cover their living costs.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Financial need: Your household income is £50,000 or less. The authorities will check this when you apply for a means-tested maintenance loan.
• Government funding: You have applied for means-tested state funding. Students from Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland must also receive their national funding or grant (for example, a ‘Learning Grant’ from the Welsh Government or an SAAS grant).
• Not eligible: You are ineligible to take part if this is your second bachelor’s degree, if you are undertaking a paid or unpaid work placement in the private sector, if you are receiving financial support from the NHS, or if you are registered solely for examinations.

How to apply

There is no separate application form. You apply for a means-tested government maintenance loan through your national student finance organisation and agree to them passing on your household income to the university. The University of Bristol will calculate your grant automatically and notify you by email during the autumn term. You must apply for it before the start of the summer holidays each academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This isn’t a competition. If you meet the income threshold and the other eligibility criteria, you’ll receive the grant automatically, and the university pays it out to thousands of students every year. The only thing you need to do is apply for the means-tested state grant and consent to your income details being shared. If you do this in good time, you’re guaranteed to receive the money.
