University of Groningen Talent Grant (Faculty of Arts)

You will receive a partial scholarship of approximately half of your annual tuition fee for a Master’s programme at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is valid for the entire duration of your studies, up to 24 months, depending on which Master’s programme you choose. The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Groningen awards this scholarship to high-achieving students from countries outside the EU/EEA. For students on a research-based Master’s programme, there is a separate scheme, the amount of which is determined annually.

Who can apply

• Your programme: You have been admitted to a Master’s programme at the Faculty of Arts, for example in Applied Linguistics, History, International Relations, Journalism or East Asian Studies.
• Nationality: You are from Asia, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, North America or South America and pay the higher tuition fees applicable to international students. The eligible countries are reviewed each year; examples include India and Indonesia.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record. Selection is based on academic performance.
• Financial need: With the ‘Research Master’ programme, you cannot fund your studies entirely yourself.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other full scholarship, such as Erasmus+ or the Eric Bleumink Scholarship. You can combine it with the Holland Scholarship.
• First Master here: You have not yet obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Groningen.

How to apply

To apply for the Master’s programme (Orange Tulip), you must apply via the NESO office in your home country. This is the local Dutch education authority responsible for processing your application. To apply for the Research Master’s programme, you must submit a personal statement. The application deadline is 1 April. Selection takes place in April or May based on your academic achievements.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very limited. You must hold an eligible nationality from outside the EU/EEA, have been admitted to a specific Master’s programme at the Faculty of Arts, and have very good grades. Only a small number of places are available per country each year. If you clearly meet these requirements and apply early with a strong academic record, your prospects are quite good. Nevertheless, the limited number of places means there is genuine competition amongst equally qualified applicants.
