University of Groningen Talent Grant - Religion

You will receive half your tuition fee covered, about 5,400 EUR, for the full two years of the funding for the research Master’s programme in ‘Theology and Religious Studies’ at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. You will be responsible for the other half yourself. You must also provide evidence that you can cover your living costs. The university recommends budgeting approximately 10,000 to 14,000 euros per year for this purpose. The faculty awards one such scholarship each year, meaning you would be the only research Master’s student to receive funding.

Who can apply

• Programme: You have been admitted to the two-year research-based Master’s programme ‘MA Theology and Religious Studies (Research)’, which begins on 1 September.
• Nationality: You are a national of a country outside the EU/EEA (the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).
• No Dutch study finance: You are not eligible for the Dutch student grant and loan scheme (‘Studiefinanciering’).
• Academic record: You have excellent grades. Selection is based on your academic record to date and your personal statement.

How to apply

You cannot apply until you have received a (provisional) letter of admission from the University of Groningen for the two-year Research Master’s programme. Complete the online application form and submit it, together with your letter of admission, a letter of recommendation, your academic transcript, a personal statement (max. 500 words) and your CV, by 1 March. A selection committee will make a decision in March, and you will receive a response by 15 May at the latest.

How realistic are your chances?

Each year, only one scholarship is awarded for a single specialisation programme. The pool of applicants is small, but so is the number of places available. If you are a strong applicant from a non-EU/non-EEA country, have already been admitted to the research master’s programme and can write a compelling personal statement, you have a real chance. Please note that this covers only half of the tuition fees; you must therefore demonstrate that you can finance the remainder yourself.
