About this scholarship

What you get

You receive a one-off scholarship for a study or research stay of up to 6 months at a Dutch university. Master's students get 3,600 EUR, PhD students get 3,900 EUR. This is an all-in amount to cover your monthly costs in the Netherlands: rent, medical insurance and visa fees. You can also get a one-time 1,000 EUR towards travel costs. Instead of a full stay, you can apply for just the travel allowance to attend a short course, summer school, conference or master class in the Netherlands. The award comes from the Foundation Study Fund for South African Students in Amsterdam.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a South African citizen.
  • Where you study now: You are enrolled at a South African university for a Master's or PhD degree.
  • Where you go: You have an acceptance letter from a Dutch university for a stay of up to 6 months.
  • Field of study: All subjects are welcome.
  • Purpose of the stay: The stay must count towards your South African degree, for example through coursework, credits or research.

How to apply

First get accepted at a Dutch university. Then submit the online application form with your acceptance letter, passport copy, transcripts and a study plan of up to 800 words. Two reference letters, from your South African and Dutch coordinators, go directly to the foundation. The deadline is 31 March, and decisions follow the board meeting in April.
