Mondriaan Fund - Mondriaan Fonds - Artist Project

What you get

You receive money to carry out a concrete art project within a set working period. This can be new work, a collaboration, a period of research, a mentoring project (working under the guidance of an experienced artist), or a working stay abroad or in the Netherlands. There are two options:

• Fixed contribution: Runs for up to 6 months. You get a standard rate of 2,785 EUR per month, which covers both your time and the project costs.
• Flexible contribution: Runs for up to 12 months. The amount depends on your plan, its length and its budget. Your time is paid at 2,180 EUR per month for full-time work (40 hours a week).

The grant comes from the Mondriaan Fonds, the Dutch public fund for visual art and heritage. You must cover at least 10% of the total sum yourself, so the fund pays at most 90% of the eligible costs. Your share can come from your own money, third parties, an interest-free loan or crowdfunding.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a visual artist who has worked professionally for at least 1 year. That year counts from the date you finished a bachelor's degree in visual art. If you have no such degree, it counts from your first presentation in professional art circles.
• Collaborations: Teams of artists working together can also apply.
• Where you work: You are part of the professional art scene in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Any nationality can apply.
• Not a current student: You cannot apply if you are enrolled in an education programme (bachelor, master, postgraduate or PhD) when you apply or during the funding period. A part-time programme under 20 hours a week is allowed, as long as it is not a bachelor.
• Recent grants: For the fixed contribution, you cannot apply if you received an Artist Start grant in the last 12 months. Over any 48-month window, you can be funded for at most 24 months.

How to apply

You apply at any time through the Mondriaan Fonds online system, for which you need an account. There are no fixed deadlines. Your application is first checked for completeness, then judged by a panel of external art experts. They may ask for more information or visit your studio (in the Netherlands only) before the board decides. Expect at least 3 months of processing. Costs you have already paid cannot be funded.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is open to any professional visual artist tied to the Dutch or Caribbean art scene, so the field is wide. The panel judges strictly on artistic quality and the strength of your plan. A strong, well-documented body of work and a clear, feasible project with an audience strategy set applicants apart. Because you can apply year-round, timing matters less than the quality of what you submit.
