LUF grant for a study visit abroad (PhD candidates)

You receive up to 2,000 EUR towards a study visit or summer school outside the Netherlands that is part of your PhD research. The grant comes from the Leiden University Fund (LUF), the funding body of Leiden University. It can cover travel from Leiden or The Hague, visa costs, vaccinations, accommodation, local transport, living costs, access to the host institution and extra insurance. You pay 10 EUR per day of your stay yourself, and a maximum daily rate applies depending on the destination country.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are a PhD candidate at Leiden University or the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC).
• Enrolment: You are enrolled at a Leiden University Graduate School.
• Purpose: The visit or summer school is part of your PhD and belongs to a research project recognised by your faculty.
• Faculty backing: Your faculty, department or institute confirms the plan and pays at least one third of the total cost.
• One-time only: You have not received a LUF 'study visit abroad' or 'foreign conference' grant before.
• Where you go: Anywhere outside the Netherlands, but not to a place with an orange or red travel warning from the government, Leiden University or the destination country.

How to apply

You apply through the LUF grant portal in Dutch or English, before your visit starts. There are three deadlines a year. In 2026 they fall on 30 January, 14 May and 22 October, and in 2027 on 11 January, 24 May and 1 November. The LUF's academic spending committee decides shortly after each deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is narrow: only PhD candidates at Leiden University or the LUMC can apply, it is a one-time award, and your faculty must already cover at least a third of the cost. If you clearly meet those conditions and your visit fits your research, your prospects are good. Apply well before your start date, because the decision must come before your stay begins.
