What the Schuurman Schimmel-van Outeren Stichting scholarship gives you

You get a grant to cover a proven gap in your study budget. It comes in one of three forms depending on your situation: up to 4,500 EUR per year to study in the Netherlands, up to 3,850 EUR per year for a master's abroad, or up to 2,750 EUR once for a compulsory internship or research placement abroad. For the two yearly grants you can apply again for further years. The money can come as a gift, an interest-free loan, or a mix of the two. The board decides the form when it approves your application. This Dutch foundation, based in Haarlem since 1883, helps students who cannot fully fund their studies.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are in a full-time programme at a Dutch university, an HBO arts programme, or an HBO programme in Haarlem. HBO is Dutch higher professional education.
• Age: You are between 18 and 30 years old.
• Financial need: You have a shortfall in your budget even after using every funding option, including the maximum loan and tuition-fee credit from DUO (the Dutch student finance body). You cannot cover the costs yourself or with your parents' help.
• Nationality to study in the Netherlands: Any nationality can apply.
• Nationality for a master's or internship abroad: Dutch citizens only.
• Grades for a master's abroad: You have a grade average of at least 7.5, and the master's you want is not available in the Netherlands.
• Timing for going abroad: You apply at least 3 months before you leave.
• Internship rule: The placement is a compulsory part of your master's, lasts at least 5 months, and earns study credits.
• Not funded: Your first study year, a second degree or second master's, PhDs, exchanges, excursions, summer courses, equipment like laptops or instruments, and theology programmes.

How to apply

Create an account in the online portal, fill in the application form, and email it with your documents. One of these is an advice statement from your student dean. There is no fixed deadline for the main programmes. The board reviews applications on a rolling basis at its meetings.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is targeted narrowly by design. You must show a real budget shortfall after exhausting DUO funding, fit the 18-to-30 age range, and provide a dean's statement. The abroad tracks add a Dutch-nationality rule and a 7.5 grade average. That keeps the applicant pool small, so a well-matched student with a clearly documented financial gap has solid prospects. Apply early and with complete paperwork, especially the three-month lead time for placements abroad.
