Erasmus+ extra funding for students with a disability or health condition

On top of your regular Erasmus+ grant, you get a top-up of 250 EUR per month for a long stay abroad, meaning an exchange or internship. For a short stay you get a one-off payment instead: 100 EUR for 5 to 14 days, or 150 EUR for 15 to 30 days. On top of that, Erasmus+ Inclusion Support pays back your real extra costs when they are higher than the top-up covers. There is no fixed amount for this part. It can cover wheelchair-accessible housing, help with travel, medical care abroad, assistive equipment, adapted study materials or a personal assistant. The money comes from the European Erasmus+ programme, run in the Netherlands by the Nationaal Agentschap Erasmus+ Onderwijs & Training.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at a Dutch university, university of applied sciences (HBO) or vocational school (MBO).
• What you do: You go abroad through Erasmus+, on an exchange or an internship.
• Your situation: You have a physical, mental, intellectual or sensory disability, or a serious or chronic illness that makes going abroad harder.
• Proof: You can show a doctor's certificate or another valid medical statement. If that is not possible, a self-declaration signed off by your dean or study advisor is accepted.
• Field and nationality: All fields of study and all nationalities can apply, as long as you are enrolled at a Dutch institution.

How to apply

You do not apply to the national agency yourself. When you plan your stay abroad, you report your needs and extra costs to the Erasmus+ coordinator or International Office at your own school. Your school then requests the funding and, together with the national agency, decides how much you receive. Each school explains the exact steps and the deadline on its own website, so check that page.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition with a fixed number of places. Since 2021 Dutch higher-education institutions must make the top-up available to students in these groups. If you have a documented disability or health condition and are going abroad through Erasmus+, you meet the core requirement, so your prospects are good. Report your needs early, while your stay is still being planned, so the extra costs can be arranged in time.
