NAF Study Abroad Grant for Utrecht University students

You receive a one-off grant of up to $5,000 (about 4,600 EUR) for one semester of study at a university in the United States. The money covers part of your exchange costs, from travel to living expenses abroad. It comes from The Netherland-America Foundation, a non-profit in New York that has supported ties between the Netherlands and the US since 1921.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled in a bachelor's or master's programme at Utrecht University.
• Field of study: You study international relations, history, political science or a closely related subject.
• Where you go: You plan one semester of study in the United States.
• First time abroad: This is your first study period abroad. Earlier exchange semesters rule you out.
• Financial need: You receive the aanvullende beurs, the top-up grant for students from lower-income families paid by DUO, the Dutch student finance agency. You must show proof of this.
• Grades: Your academic results count in the selection.

How to apply

You apply directly through the NAF's Submittable portal, in English, by 1 April 2026. You submit your CV, transcript, proof of admission (or expected admission) from the US university, a budget and a DUO statement showing you receive the aanvullende beurs. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to a virtual interview. Results are expected between late April and mid-May.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly. Only Utrecht University students in a handful of related subjects, going to the US for the first time and already on the DUO top-up grant can apply. That keeps the pool small. If you clearly meet these conditions, can document your financial need and write a strong motivation, your prospects are good.
