You receive a one-off travel grant of 1,000 EUR to cover part of a study or internship period abroad. Utrecht University hands out four of these grants each year between 2024 and 2029. The money comes from a bequest by Professor Thijs Pollmann, who started the first broad bachelor's programme in the Netherlands. The grant fills a gap in your budget when no other funding covers the same costs.

Who can apply

• Your programme: You study the bachelor's programme Language and Cultural Studies (Taal- en cultuurstudies, TCS) at Utrecht University.
• Going abroad: The faculty has selected you for a study or internship place abroad, and the credits you earn there count towards your TCS exam programme.
• Timing: Your stay abroad takes place within four years of starting TCS, and you have not been on an exchange before.
• No double funding: You cannot get another grant for the same destination, because you may only receive one grant for the same purpose.
• Financial need: The grant closes a shortfall in your budget plan for the trip.
• Fit: You can explain how language (communication, discourse, multilingualism) and culture (history, art, beliefs, media) matter for your planned stay, and you set out clear personal learning goals.

How to apply

You apply through the Utrecht University Fund grant portal between 2 and 27 November 2026. You submit a motivation letter and a confidential budget plan, so only your study advisor sees your financial details. Apply for this grant before you apply to the International Office, because knowing whether you have the grant can shape your plans.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly. Only students in one specific Utrecht bachelor's programme can apply, and only if they are already selected for a stay abroad and have a real budget shortfall. With four grants each year and such a small eligible group, the field stays limited. If you fit those conditions and can show a clear financial gap and a strong link between your studies and your trip, your prospects are good.
