Sustainable Humanities Scholarship (Universiteit Leiden)

You get a one-off grant towards a study period abroad that is built into your Leiden degree. The money helps cover your travel and living costs in the host country. The exact amount is not published in advance. It depends on where you go and which programme you are in, and you are told the figure during your programme's information sessions. Leiden University runs the scholarship as part of its "Sustainable Humanities" programme, which supports area-studies degrees. Possible destinations include Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey and Uzbekistan, depending on the safety situation in each country.

Who can apply

• University: You study at Leiden University in the Faculty of Humanities.
• Field of study: You are enrolled in one of these area-studies programmes: BA African Studies, Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Russian Studies, South and Southeast Asian Studies, or the MA Asian Studies (120 EC).
• Level: You are a bachelor's or master's student.
• Study abroad: You are taking part in a pre-arranged exchange that is an official part of your Leiden degree.
• Nomination: Your Leiden programme nominates you. You cannot apply on your own, and nomination happens once your study-abroad plan is approved.
• No double funding: You cannot combine this with a LUSTRA+ Scholarship.

How to apply

There is no open application. Your programme nominates you after approving your exchange, and it explains the details to you at that point. Deadlines differ per programme and are announced during the information sessions.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly. Only students in a handful of Leiden area-studies programmes who go abroad as part of their degree qualify, so the eligible group is small. If you are enrolled in one of these programmes and your exchange is approved, your programme handles the nomination for you, which makes the path straightforward once you fit. Attend the information sessions early so you do not miss your programme's deadline.
