About this scholarship

ISS Hardship Fund

You have been awarded a discount of up to 30% off your tuition fee for the one-year Master’s programme in ‘Development Studies’ at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. The ISS is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The grant is not paid out in cash but is applied towards your tuition fees; the exact amount therefore depends on the level of your tuition fees. It is intended for students who are unable to cover the full cost of their tuition fees themselves.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are admitted to the MA in Development Studies at ISS and hold a letter of admission. The fund is only for this master's, not for PhD students.
  • Nationality: Open to students of all nationalities, including Dutch, EU and EEA students.
  • Financial need: You are unable to cover your tuition fees, living costs and health insurance from your own funds, which you can prove by providing bank statements and financial documents.
  • Which fund fits you: This is the fund for students with financial need. If you have an upper second or first-class degree in a social science, apply to the separate Excellent Students fund instead.
  • Motivation: You should write a one-page statement explaining why you need the support.

How to apply

Please email your application, including a one-page personal statement and details of your financial circumstances, to the ISS Admissions Office. Applications are processed on a rolling basis between January and July; the final deadline for applications is 15 June. Please apply as early as possible, as funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis whilst funds last.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is linked to a specific Master’s programme at a specific university and is aimed at applicants with genuine financial need. The number of people eligible for funding is relatively small. The amount represents a reduction, not a full waiver of fees, and places are limited due to the restricted budget. If you can clearly demonstrate that you cannot afford the tuition fees and apply early during the period from January to June, your chances are quite good.
